Fat Bike Festival February 12 at Mt. Hood Meadows
Fat Bike Festival Features FREE Demos Friday February 12 at Mt. Hood Meadows MT. HOOD, OR (Immediate Release) – Fat bikes are all the rage and in a state like Oregon they should be! These modified mountain bikes sport tires that are twice as wide to provide traction on otherwise unrideable surfaces - like SNOW! They also make beach riding not only possible but fun. Bike enthusiasts are looking at adding a fat bike to their arsenal, but recreational bike riders should consider making the fat bike their ride of choice. They’re versatile and a lot of fun! Avid biker and Meadows Director of Mountain Operations Tom Scully says Fat Bikes make a great family activity. "They are easy to ride and the increased traction allows all abilities to enjoy dirt, snow, sand, mud and pavement. They are not at all limiting for a family that wants to ride in all kinds of different places and conditions. We'll have a single track course and a great place to try out Fat Bikes at our demo. We encourage the entire family to come up and enjoy it." Meadows will provide the opportunity to try it Friday, February 12 with free Fat Bike demos provided by Mountain View Cycles of Hood River. With a riding area set up in Yellow Meadow (conveniently located near the North Lodge) and with a course to take some laps on a Fat Bike. You can also bring your own Fat Bike to ride on the snow course. Preregistration is recommended (though not required) to assure a chance to demo a Fat Bike for free. There is no charge and you can preregister at www.SkiHood.com/FatBike signed waivers are required so parents must accompany those under 18. Meadows will make a party of it, thanks to sponsors, Mountain View Cycles, Trek Bikes, Craft Cycling Apparel and Hammer Nutrition showing off product and sampling. Experts will be on hand to talk about Fat Bikes and there will be some fun competitions as well. The event is scheduled from 11 AM - 3 PM Friday, February 12 (weather permitting). Villages at Mt. Hood Board of Directors Meeting Today
Notice for the Villages at Mt. Hood Board of Directors Meeting on Tuesday; February 2, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Resort at the Mountain (Trees Room).
Resort at the Mountain has New Ownership in 2016
The Resort at the Mountain is under new ownership as of the beginning of 2016. The Resort website states the new owner as Stanford Oregon Hotel LLC. The mountain community is anxious to find what changes the new owner will bring to the Resort.
A lot has been happening at the Resort over the past six months.
*The resort is the first Best Western Premier Collection property in North America.
*Welches had a major wind storm that knocked out power and caused many large trees along the golf course to come down causing the greens keeper headaches.
*A three alarm fire on December 30th had guests scrambling out of their units in building 4 from flames. Ten rooms were destroyed from the fire, no one was hurt, and the cause of the fire still has not been determined after investigation.
Hopefully things will settle down for the new owner! As a major employer for our area, locals are anxious to see how new management takes the reins.

Snow Brings Thousands to Slopes on Mt. Hood Near Government Camp
Snow brings thousands to the slopes during holiday break with traffic slowdowns from Brightwood to Mt. Hood Meadows. At 3:30 PM today, traffic was bumper to bumper heading East towards three ski areas, Mt. Hood Meadows, Timberline and Ski Bowl plus travelers heading home to Bend and other areas on the East side of the state.
Stand still traffic with bumper to bumper conditions make the drive up and back from skiing challenging today. The best ski conditions we've seen in several years brought the skiers, boarders and snow seekers to Mt. Hood. When the sun went down some drivers took nearly two hours to drive from Mt. Hood Meadows to Welches on fairly clear roads.
There's only one thing to do with this amount of people heading to the mountain and that's to get up early and hit the roads. Ski area parking lots will run out of room and the trip may be in vain if you don't get here bright and early! These conditions could continue through New Years with the amount of snow we have.
Road 20 Wind Damage-Rhododendron Oregon
Portland is flooding this week but the damage done in a wind storm that blew through the Mt. Hood area in November is still very apparent if you drive up road 20 in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Along Highway 26 near Toll Gate Campground you will see massive firs fallen parallel to Highway 26. It's a wonder no one was killed along this stretch.
I have yet to learn how many Mt Hood National Forest cabins were damaged during this storm. On road 20 there are still power lines down and likely many cabins still without electricity if you can even get to the cabin. Like match sticks, big firs were down left and right. Huge shallow root wads litter the forest. Chain saw dust sprinkles the road and driveways. I didn't attempt some of the side roads as the main road was enough to tell the story.
An army of insurance adjusters were sent to Oregon after this storm and with the pineapple express that came this week they will be lucky to be home by the end of the year.
Mt. Hood National Forest Holiday Tree Cutting Permits
It's that time of the year where friends and families head for the Cascade foothills in the Mt. Hood National Forest to find the perfect tree for their holiday gatherings. Permits are available between Nov. 2nd and December 24th in the Mt. Hood National Forest. The cost is only $5.00 per tree! Head on up to Rhododendron and bring your hot chocolate because it's cold up here!
