Welches, Or - Our Fire District is expecting thousands of visitors from all over the world to travel through or view the eclipse near Mt. Hood. Although the eclipse does not occur until Monday, the influx of visitors is expected to impact our area throughout the weekend starting today, August 17. Highway 26 through the Hoodland corridor could see traffic congestion to the point of gridlock. The public needs to be aware that there are no other major roads to bypass Highway 26 between Sandy and Government Camp.

To prepare for gridlock on Highway 26, Hoodland Fire District is implementing the use of two (2) BMW adventure sport motorcycles staffed with a Paramedic and EMT to respond to emergency incidents ahead of larger fire engines. The two motorcycles were rented from Cascade Back Road Adventures and Rentals out of Wahkiacus, Washington. The "motor-medic" crews will provide advanced medical care as well as scene management or landing zone support and will be equipped with medical, traffic control and landing zone equipment. The Fire District is also utilizing their side-by-side ATV out of the Government Camp substation to reach visitors camping on National Forest lands around the Government Camp area.

Hoodland Fire District would like to remind Fire District residents to be prepared for the Eclipse that will occur this Monday, August 21. Residents are asked to take some proactive measures to minimize the impact. Use common sense. Do not travel over the weekend and especially Monday if you do not have to. If it is necessary, allow yourself plenty of extra time to get to your destination. Remember first responders may also have trouble traveling to calls for service due to roadway congestion; however, there may be some delays in response time.

Heat Wave and Haze

by Liz Warren

There's smoke in the air and a recent trip to Summit Meadows in Government Camp showed how hazy the view is around Mt. Hood. Mt. Jefferson has contributed to our local haze. Washington state is in the same boat with over 100 wildfires sending smoke south from Canada.

Seven day forecast does not show a lot of improvement until next Thursday when we will receive a little bit of rain (we hope).

Scorching heat for the Welches Mt. Hood area doesn't show percipitation for another week!

Mt. Hood’s Glacier Caves Have Collapsed

by Liz Warren

In 2011 explorers  Brent McGregor, Eduardo Cartaya and Scott Linn began photographing and mapping Mt. Hood’s Glacier Ice Cave. This was the largest glacier cave system in the lower 48 with more than 7,000 feet of passages. News coverage by OPB and the Oregonian brought much interest in the ice caves to the public. Only five years later, the caves are gone and collapsed.

OPB has some stunning photos of what the cave looked like at discovery and after the collapse.

Mt. Hood's Rental Crisis

by Liz Warren

If you've been "thinking" about buying a home on Mt. Hood, this graph really says it all. We receive countless calls and inquiries from people looking for rentals in our area. Well, there are none. We haven't heard of any in about 8 months. Portland's rental crisis is our crisis too. Nationally, Portland's crisis is getting compared to San Francisco's crisis.

On the mountain many workers for the ski industry have been left out in the cold with few options for living close to work creating longer commute times. Many properties have been scooped up by investors looking for vacation rentals leaving fewer homes available for purchase. We've never seen inventory this low on the mountain. Bad for renters, good for sellers who are seeing escalating prices and bidding wars in many cases.

Interest rates will be going up this year and are projected to end in the 4.5 to 5% by years end. Avoid contining rising rents and BUY A HOUSE TODAY!

Mt. Hood Sellers

by Liz Warren

Now that the new year is in full swing, now if the time to prepare for getting your home on the market as soon as possible. Most transactions these days take 45 to 60 days to close and sometimes even longer!  My best advise to sellers is to take action now and don't wait till spring to get your property ready for the market.

Holiday Tree Cutting on Mt. Hood

by Liz Warren

A holiday tradition on Mt. Hood is to trek out into the forest and make an adventure of finding and cutting your holiday tree.  For only $5.00, a permit will allow you to cut a holiday tree up to 12 feet high. There are permits for trees taller than 12 feet at an additional cost. Limit is 5 trees per household.
